If you lost your authentication methods
Login.gov uses a two-step process and a 24 hour waiting period here. Go to your government application sign-in page or https://secure.login.gov and sign in with your email and password. On the authentication page, click Choose another security option, scroll to the bottom and click the deleting your account link. Read the information, then click Yes, continue deletion. You get two emails: the first confirms the request (the account isn't deleted yet), and the second arrives 24 hours later with the directions to finish.
What stays out there
Deleting Login.gov removes your sign-in credentials at Login.gov. It doesn't touch the records agencies keep, and it has no effect on copies of your name, address or phone number held by data brokers and people-search sites.
If you're deleting the account because you worry about exposure, search your name and check what those sites list. Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them, and keeps watching for new listings.
