Cancel any subscription bought through an app store
Deleting the account cancels a ChatGPT plan billed by OpenAI. A plan bought through the Apple App Store or Google Play isn't cancelled by deletion, so cancel it in that store first.

Check what else uses the same email
If the same email also signs in to an OpenAI Ads account, deleting may lock you out of it, and active campaigns can keep running and charging. Pause them and make sure someone else has access before you go on.

Open Settings in ChatGPT
Sign in to ChatGPT, open your account menu and select Settings, then Account.

Delete the account
Next to Delete account, select Delete. Enter your account email or phone number, type DELETE when prompted, then select Permanently delete my account.

No access? Use the Privacy Portal
If you can't sign in, go to OpenAI's Privacy Portal, select Make a Privacy Request, choose I have a consumer ChatGPT account, then Delete my ChatGPT account and follow the verification steps. You must be able to verify the email or phone number on the account.
Watch out for
- Deletion is permanent. OpenAI can't undo it.
- OpenAI says it deletes your data within 30 days, but may keep a limited set longer where the law requires or allows it.
- A subscription bought through the Apple App Store or Google Play keeps billing until you cancel it there.
- Self-service deletion isn't available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu or Healthcare workspaces. Ask your organization.
- Menu names can differ by app version.

What stays out there
Deleting your ChatGPT account stops OpenAI holding your chats and profile going forward. It doesn't affect anything you pasted into other services, or what other companies already hold about you.
The names, addresses and phone numbers people-search sites list are separate from any AI account, and they stay until each site is asked to remove them.
