Serus is a privacy company with paid tools to find and remove your personal data. This guide shows the free way to do it yourself.

Step by step

  1. 1

Check you're in the right account

Evernote's help center says to confirm the email address before you delete. If you have more than one Evernote account, sign in to the one you want gone and look at its contents first.

  2. 2

    Export your notes

Closing deletes all notes, notebooks and tags, and you can't get them back. Evernote suggests exporting first, as ENEX or HTML, or as a PDF for single notes.

  3. 3

    Cancel a paid subscription

If you pay for Evernote, cancel the auto-renewal before you close the account. This applies even on a free trial. Closing mid-subscription doesn't clear an open balance.

  4. 4

    Open your account settings

Sign in to your Evernote account settings.

  5. 5

    Go to Account security

Click Account security in the left-side menu.

  6. 6

    Click Close account

Click the blue Close account link and follow the prompts to permanently close and delete the account.

Watch out for

  • Closing is permanent. Evernote says the content can't be retrieved and the account can't be opened again, even by Customer Support.
  • Deleting the account also removes the email address and password tied to it.
  • A paid plan must be cancelled first. Evernote's Refund Policy applies in all cases of account closure.
  • The Privacy web form is only for individual users, and the email you enter has to match the account.

Other ways to do it

  1. 1

    Use the privacy web form

Individual users (Free, Personal or Professional) can send a deletion request through Evernote's Privacy web form. Choose I want to delete my account under How can we help you?. Use the email address tied to the account you want to delete. A verification email comes from no-reply@mail.privacy.bendingspoons.com, so check spam if it doesn't show up.

  2. 2

    Teams accounts

Teams members ask their Teams administrator. Administrators use the Contact form and choose Accounts and Subscriptions > Teams > I'd like to submit a privacy request.

What stays out there

Closing the account stops new data collection at that one company. It doesn't touch copies that data brokers and people-search sites already hold, such as an email address, a name or a phone number that was scraped, bought or leaked earlier.

Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them from the sites that hold them, including people-search sites where you live.

Frequently asked

Can I get my Evernote account back after closing it?

No. Evernote says the action isn't reversible and that your content and account won't be accessible again, even by Customer Support.

Do I need to cancel my subscription before deleting Evernote?

Yes, if you have a paid plan. Cancel the auto-renewal first, even if you're on a free trial.

How do I save my notes before deleting?

Export them as ENEX or HTML, or export notes as a PDF, using the steps in Evernote's Help & Learning Center.

How do I delete a Teams account?

Teams users contact their Teams administrators. Administrators submit a request through Evernote's Contact form under Accounts and Subscriptions > Teams.
